ICBA Honors Scotia-Area Bank for Outstanding Community Service

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 4, 2006) - The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) named 1st National Bank of Scotia one of the top honorees in the 2006 National Community Bank Service Awards for the bank's outstanding leadership in organizing and running Scotia's Business Improvement District (BID) and promoting on-going activities in the village.

"We couldn't be prouder of 1st National Bank of Scotia," said Camden R. Fine, ICBA president and CEO. "This bank is a shining example of the volunteer service community banks all over the country provide every day."

1st National Bank of Scotia's work for the BID began in 1996 and has continued to help revitalize and maintain the village for the past 10 years. The bank sponsors two annual fundraising events for the BID, “Holiday on the Avenue” in December and "Cruising on the Avenue" to honor Father's Day. Bank employees provide leadership, staffing and funding on an on-going basis to promote business and a lively village.

"1st National Bank of Scotia is honored to be recognized for our work with the Scotia Business Improvement District," said John H. Buhrmaster, 1st National Bank of Scotia, president. "The BID and the annual events such as Holiday on the Ave have greatly enhanced the atmosphere for business and the feeling of community in the village. The Village of Scotia has been home to our bank since it's founding over 80 years ago, and our commitment to the community is as strong now as it was then. Generations of employees giving back to their communities is our foundation, and something we would do with or without recognition."

ICBA founded the National Community Bank Service Awards program five years ago as part of April’s Community Banking Month to recognize the outstanding volunteer efforts of community banks. The ICBA National Community Bank Service Awards bring national recognition to the significant contributions community banks make in their local areas. The awards are given to ICBA members that show longstanding commitments to community outreach development.
