Kenneth Buhrmaster retires as Chairman of 1st National Bank of Scotia, will now serve as Honorary Director
SCOTIA (July 19, 2005) - 1st National Bank of Scotia has announced the retirement of Kenneth E. Buhrmaster, Chairman of the Board and his appointment as Honorary Director of the bank. Throughout his extensive career Mr. Buhrmaster has tirelessly dedicated himself to the bank's success and to community improvement on local, state and national levels. 1st National Bank of Scotia is honored to receive Mr. Buhrmaster's continued service and guidance.
A native of Scotia, NY, Mr. Buhrmaster graduated from Syracuse University in 1937 where he was elected President of the Men's Student Senate, Commodore of the Crew and a member of Theta Chi and Phi Kappa Alpha. His experiences as an undergraduate prepared him to excel in the fields of business, education and community development.
In 1945 Mr. Buhrmaster was elected Director of the Glenville Bank, which was renamed 1st National Bank of Scotia in 1954. From 1953 to 1966 he served as bank President and was elected Chairmen of the Board in 1966. During his tremendously successful tenure the bank saw its assets increase from $7 million and a single branch to $273 million and over 10 branches in 2005. This growth can be attributed to Mr. Buhrmaster's drive to offer excellent customer service and his belief in reinvesting in local communities.
Mr. Buhrmaster's continued commitment to local communities solidified 1st National Bank of Scotia's reputation as a true family bank with the public's best interests in mind. His efforts to improve education in New York State have been great and far-reaching. In 1953 he was elected Area Director of the New York State School Boards Association and became its President in 1961. In 1966 Mr. Buhrmaster was elected Director of the National School Boards Association, and became President in 1968. From 1963 to 1969 Mr. Buhrmaster served as Chairman of the New York State Educational Conference Board, a body of 10 educational organizations that work to enact educational legislation in New York State. Mr. Buhrmaster also served as President of the New York State Teachers Retirement Board from 1968 until 1992. Mr. Buhrmaster was also the Chairman of the New York State Bankers Association Retirement system from 1971 until 1972, and was elected President of the New York State Bankers Association in 1974. Mr. Buhrmaster has also been a member of the Scotia Rotary club since 1938, serving as President during 1955-1956.
Many local and state organizations have recognized Mr. Buhrmaster's dedication to the public. In 1987 he was presented with the Alexander Glen Award by the Village of Scotia, recognizing his long and faithful service to the people of Scotia. In 1991 the New York State Senate passed a resolution sponsored by Senator Hugh T. Farley recognizing Mr. Buhrmaster's lifetime achievements. Undoubtedly, the economic and educational guidance provided by Mr. Buhrmaster has had positive effects on hundreds of families in Scotia and throughout New York State.
